How we model this

The assumptions behind every projection.

Every chart on OWN's public pages that shows a future value is an illustrative projection for a sample household — not a forecast of your results. This page lists what those projections assume. Projections are not predictions, and actual results will differ.

What the projections assume

  • Return rates. Growth paths use a fixed nominal annual rate applied evenly across the horizon — real markets do not move in straight lines. The illustrative strategy paths use, as at 2026-07-26: balanced 6.0%, growth 7.9%, a TSX-composite path 5.1%, and an S&P 500 path 8.7%. The pensions illustration instead projects its defined-contribution pot at a 3.5% real return.
  • Inflation. The strategy growth paths above are shown in nominal dollars — no separate inflation adjustment is applied to them. Where a projection is instead stated on a real-return basis (for example the pensions illustration's 3.5%), inflation is already netted out of the rate rather than shown as a separate assumption (as at 2026-07-26).
  • Contributions. Projections assume contributions continue at the level shown on the chart, without interruption. Changing the contribution changes the outcome.
  • Tax parameters. Contribution limits, brackets and credits use published government parameters for the stated year.
  • Life expectancy / horizon. Retirement and drawdown illustrations use a fixed planning/retirement age of 65.
  • Sample household. Figures are illustrated on a representative household, not on your accounts. Your own numbers, once connected, produce different results.

What a projection is — and is not

Projections, forecasts, scenarios and illustrations on OWN are hypothetical. They are generated from the inputs shown and the assumptions above, are provided for education and illustration only, and do not guarantee or predict future results. They are not personalized financial, investment, tax, insurance or legal advice. OWN Financial is not a registered dealer, adviser or portfolio manager. Have a qualified professional review important decisions.

This page is the modeling reference for every projection and illustration on OWN's public site. If a chart's assumptions differ from those described here, the chart's own on-surface note governs.
